Over
7 thousand job seeks are record during the first quarter
Unemployment among young people all over the
world is on the rise, and Brunei Darussalam is no exception. The latest
statistics from the Department of Labour shows a continuous increase in
the number of job seekers in the country. This was stated by The
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports at the Launching of the Youth
skills Development Program and the Youth Development Resources for the
Youth Development Centre, a public- private partnership between the
Brunei Economic Development Board, The Youth Development Centre and
Alcoa. Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Retired Major General
Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Awang Mohammad also said that there are over
6,000 job seekers in 2006, in the first quarter of this year the number
increases to over 7,000. Almost 100 percent of the figure is made up of
high school leavers or below.
The Youth Skills Development Program and the
Youth Development Resources has three components. First, motivational
talks to raise self esteem and confidence, secondly, a business
Mentorship program whereby successful members of the local business
community share their knowledge and experience with participants and
thirdly a micro grants scheme to help participants who are serious about
starting their own business. The Program will be open to 60 participants
from the Youth Development Centre and runs from July to December this
year.
